Proposition 1 is a transportation levy that will address Seattle’s aging infrastructure and improve mobility, safety, and sustainability. This measure will fund critical investments in road and bridge repairs, sidewalk upgrades, transit access, and safety improvements throughout the city.

The Keep Seattle Moving Levy will invest $1.55 billion to improve safety, the economy, and the climate, including over $400 million for street maintenance and modernization, $221 million for bridge infrastructure and safety, and close to $200 million for pedestrian safety.

Proposition 1 will positively impact your commute by improving road conditions and reducing congestion. Repaving 15 major corridors, repairing key bridges, and upgrading street lighting and signal coordination will ensure smoother and safer travel. Additionally, transit improvements will make bus rides faster and more reliable.

The levy will enhance your bike trip by improving cyclist safety and infrastructure. Proposition 1 includes funding to build new critical connections as well as make existing bike lanes safer with concrete barriers and ongoing maintenance.. These improvements aim to create a more bike-friendly city.

The levy will cost the average homeowner about $18 more per month. Funding will be used specifically for the projects outlined in the measure, focusing on transparency and accountability.

The levy includes exemptions for seniors, people with disabilities, and disabled veterans.

The levy includes provisions for independent public oversight to ensure that the funds are used appropriately and that projects are delivered on time and within budget. Regular reports will be available to the public to track progress and expenditures.

Proposition 1 is an 8-year package. The investments and improvements funded by this measure will be spread over this period to ensure that projects are completed effectively and efficiently. Passing this Levy now helps establish a pattern of aligning transportation measures with presidential election years, which generally have higher voter turnout. This Levy is set for eight years, so a renewal campaign will likely align with a presidential election in 2032.

If the 2024 levy doesn’t pass, it would be a significant setback for improving street safety. The Move Seattle Levy, which is set to expire at the end of 2024, currently makes up about 30% of SDOT’s budget and funds most capital road improvements. Without this new levy, SDOT might have to cut staff and struggle to find the right experts to continue this critical work.
